Seeking wisdom (again)…

Some time ago I blogged on the subject of wisdom. While I wrote about the desirability of people learning about wisdom, I didn’t actually say much about wisdom itself. Let me do that now, drawing on the work of Richard Clifford, S.J. In an article in The New Interpreter’s Bible, Clifford comments on the difficulty in defining wisdom because of its varied aspects. These include:

  • First, wisdom is practical, involving knowledge about how the world works so that one can master and enjoy life fully.
  • Second, wisdom can reveal an understanding of the secrets of the universe.
  • Third, divine wisdom should be sought because human wisdom has limits.
  • Fourth, acquiring wisdom requires both human effort – thus gained through experience – and also receptivity to wisdom as a divine gift.
  • Last, wisdom must be sought after through constant reflection. In regards to this last point, the Bible personifies wisdom as a woman crying out for suitors to seek after her, as shown in the following sketch…
May I encourage us to seek after wisdom. Our world needs wise people, not just religious ones!
