Haggai no. 3

I recently preached a short series on the Old Testament book of Haggai. In this blog, I’m presenting a summary of the last of the three sermons. (See the two preceding blogs for summaries of the first two sermons.) In verses 10 – 23 of Haggai chapter 2, the writer presents three oracles. The first establishes that holiness is not contagious. In the second, Haggai predicts God’s abundance for his people as they struggle to rebuild the temple and thrive in the land having returned from exile.

Post-exilic rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem

In the last oracle, governor Zerubbabel is promised divine authority. Without taking from the book of Haggai, I the looked at Jesus, whom the New Testament describes as being imbued with divine authority, and in whom believers are promised an abundant life. The final point of the chiastic argument then presented a contrast: the holiness of Jesus is contagious. For Christians, salvation comes in the holiness imputed to believers from Jesus.
