Haggai no. 1

Recently I preached a short sermon series on the Old Testament book of Haggai. The book records the prophetic work of Haggai over a four month period in 520BC. The people of God have been trickling back from exile in Babylon for about twenty years. Instead of their homecoming being a glorious, joyful, event, the returnees have discovered their ancestral homeland to be in ruins and suffering from decades of neglect. They appear to have succumbed to despair and sluggishness. Focussing only on trying to sort out their own living situations, they find that times are hard and food is scarce. And then Haggai steps in with a word from god.

Haggai challenges the people to rebuild the Temple, destroyed nearly 70 years before by the conquering Babylonians. Underlying this challenge is a principle that I think everyone everywhere should keep in mind. Without a sense of a higher meaning to life than simply survival or looking after oneself, life can be tough. For those who have a religious view of life, I would express this as: We need a constantly renewed vision of God in our midst. What are you doing to foster a sense of meaning, or a renewed vision of God, in your life?
